Collins Wild Guide to Mushrooms and Toadstools

Collins Wild Guide to Mushrooms and Toadstools of Britain and Europe by Brian Spooner

Review

This illustrated guide to mushrooms and toadstools enables quick and easy identification of 240 species found in Britain and Europe. The text includes information about distribution, habitat, season, size, stem and gills, whether it is poisonous or edible and any associated folklore.

This guide has been my greatest help in identifying mushrooms. It has a section guiding the mushroom enthusiast to understanding all there is to understand about mushrooms, followed by 1751 excellent colour illustrations (coloured drawings). The descriptions are short but concise, focused on the most important characteristics of each fungus. Though the guide covers only a part of the fungal world - it would take a multi-volume encyclopaedia of fungi to cover most of it - I consider it a great work that should find its way to every mushroom fan's bookshelf.
